One of the best and most riveting documentaries to come out in recent memory is the rock-climbing epic ‘Free Solo’. It follows the exploits of professional rock climber Alex Honnold as he attempts to conquer the first-ever free solo climb of the famous El Capitan’s 900-metre vertical rock face at Yosemite National Park.  While most of us cannot claim to have even attempted something on the scale of that feat, there is definitely something to be said about what watching a documentary like that can do in people. It seems to inspire the best parts of us to do our own metaphorical (or actual!) climbing, as well as provokes and challenges us to think outside of our easily formed comfort bubbles and look beyond them. 

Are there any adventure-hungry thrill-seekers out there? We know they exist! In some ways, adventure makes life meaningful. Can you picture our existence without weekly trips to the supermarket? Or the beach with your significant other?

If smooth roads and seamless drives aren’t for you, you’re probably a 4x4er at heart. Fortunately for you, the world of 4x4ing is vast and exciting enough to entertain you for years and years ahead! However, one thing that’s needed before you head on your 4×4 adventure is a good understanding of what it is and what you need on a trip.  

This is where we come in! 

It’s often said that summer is the best of the four seasons. A lot of people will opt for a sunny day at the beach over a cloudy one, as the sun seems to bring about a different form of joy and happiness.  This isn’t only the case with beach-goers, however. If you’re a thrill-seeker and you love to test your mettle by participating in various forms of risky action sports and activities, the odds that you’d prefer to do those in the rain over the sun are very slim.

So, rock climbing seems to have experienced a resurgence of late. Has anybody noticed that? If you’re reading this, you’re probably a part of it!  We’re also pretty sure the Olympics had something to do with it.  What about scaling a rock face gets people excited and ready to conquer their fears? Well, we’re proud to say that, like you, we are thrilled that rock climbing is back. Not that it’s ever gone anywhere, though.  

If you’ve ever driven along a dirt road or a very uneven road with a bunch of potholes, you may feel like you’ve experienced the ‘joys’ of 4x4ing. After all, isn’t 4x4ing just driving your big car on some kind of off-road that’s not smooth? Surely the whole point of 4x4ing is to shake everything in the car around and have a jumping party inside?

Okay, that last part is a bit fantastical, but it’s definitely easy to assume that that’s all 4x4ing is. Unfortunately, that would be the wrong assumption.

In today’s automotive era, it’s become quite an easy (but not that easy) exploit to grab the family or some friends and head off-road on a grand 4×4 adventure. If you’ve ever had an inkling to head out onto the rough terrain in a monstrous Landie, you’ll understand what we mean. 

If you’ve ever been rock climbing or abseiling, you’ll know that they can be quite a thrill. They can also be pretty daunting. Sure, you could play it safe and never consider partaking in either of these activities, but where’s the fun in that? All that’s needed to remedy any resistance inside of you is a swift bolt of courage via a pep talk from a friend (or from yourself to yourself) or a moment of silent contemplation. Whatever works for you, you know?

You know those 4×4 vehicles you see stopped at the robots that are covered in dust? Perhaps they have children’s drawings on the back window, or the ever-popular “wash me” scribbled in capitals. You know the ones. Well, they’ve most probably just been 4x4ing. Scaling some glorious South African terrain in search of thrills and adventure. While the car may just look dirty while waiting for the light to go green, it’s actually covered in remnants of its off-road epic journey.

Klein Tafelberg started with a vision. We had a vision of a place where there was fun, lots of laughs, and pushing the boundaries of the human spirit. We bought Klein Tafelberg as a business but grew it as a project close to our hearts.
